The Banff International Research Station will host the "Joint Spectra and related Topics in Complex Dynamics and Representation Theory" workshop in Banff from May 21 to May 26, 2023.

Mathematics has a wide range of different disciplines, from algebra to geometry and from analysis to topology, etc. Some discoveries, however, are able to link several disciplines together and open a field of interplay. Two of such recent discoveries are self-similar group representations and projective spectrum of linear operators. The goal of this workshop is bring together scholars in spectral theory, representation theory, complex dynamics and other related fields to exchange and examine some recent discoveries on self-similarity and projective spectrum.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).

This workshop focuses on the interplay between dynamics, rigidity, and arithmetic in hyperbolic geometry and related areas. There have been many striking developments in recent years, particularly related to totally geodesic submanifolds in both finite and infinite volume hyperbolic and even complex hyperbolic manifolds.

One aim of this workshop is to expose young researchers to these breakthroughs providing them with the necessary background from dynamics, and geometry to allow them to appreciate some of these recent advances, and prepare them to make new original contributions. For this purpose, we will have minicourses on "Arithmeticity, Superrigidity and totally geodesic manifolds", and "Rigidity and geodesic planes in infinite volume hyperbolic manifolds". These courses will be preceded by an introductory minicourse on Hyperbolic geometry. We will also have a minicourse on "Understanding of geodesic planes in hyperbolic 3-manifolds via computations and visualization". In addition, we wish to bring together experts in these fields to discuss the recent developments and open problems that lie at the crossroads of these different fields and to encourage more interaction among people working in these diverse areas.

This workshop belongs to the Beyond Uniform Hyperbolicity series of conferences that have been held every
2-3 years since 2001.  The previous edition of this conference was at CIRM in Luminy, France in 2019.

The conference will consist of six minicourses and plenty of opportunities for informal discussions and work groups, as

The understanding of Anosov flows, together with their generalizations and their relationships to other fields and structures, has led to many discoveries in
dynamical systems, geometry and geometric topology. There have been numerous recent major advances in the study of Anosov flows, particularly in dimension 3,
as well as adoption of new tools, such as microlocal analysis, and uncovering of new connections, for instance with contact geometry. All this puts the solution
to old questions, such as the classification of Anosov flows in dimension 3, tantalizingly close, and it opens up new avenues of research.

This conference aims to bring together researchers from different backgrounds who study or use Anosov flows. In particular, we will include researchers in
contact geometry/topology, uniformly and non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems, low-dimensional dynamics, low-dimensional topology, and microlocal
analysis.

Geometry and Analysis of Fluid Flows - With a special tribute to David Ebin on the occasion of his 80th birthday and retirement Stony Brook University, January 16-20, 2023

Aim: The workshop will feature a mathematically diverse group of speakers whose expertise spans multiple relevant areas. Topics to be discussed at the workshop include free boundary problems in fluid dynamics, the geometry of infinite-dimensional groups, singular limits in fluid flows, well-posedness and regularity of fluid equations, and differential geometric methods in mathematics and physics. The workshop will happen in conjunction with a celebration of David Ebin’s contributions to these topics on the occasion of his 80th birthday and retirement.

Financial Support: Limited financial support is available for young researchers and researchers of underrepresented groups. The deadline for applying is 12/2/2022.

October 2022 marks the 70th anniversary of IMPA's foundation. Over those seven decades, the institute established itself as an international center of excellence in mathematical research, with a strong impact in all of Latin America, namely through its track record in the training of young researchers from the region and other parts of the world. IMPA's wide range activities go much beyond, encompassing the publication of books and other educational materials, the training of school teachers, the technological collaboration with the Brazilian industry, the organization of nationwide school olympiads, and the active popularization of mathematics.

To mark the occasion, we are holding an international conference which will take place at IMPA's headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, from October 17 to 21, 2022. The conference will feature a large number of distinguished international participants, including Fields Medalists and Nobel laureate as invited speakers.
